Eden Valley Hospice

1008796

Eden Valley Hospice cares for adults from the Cumbria and South West Scotland area with life-limiting illnesses, especially cancer, but also other conditions such as motor neurone disease, muscular dystrophy, heart failure, chronic lung diseases, renal failure, multiple sclerosis and chronic neurological conditions. We strive to provide the highest standards of nursing and medical care, to sustain quality of life and dignity and to provide patients with relief from pain when they need it most.

To the families, friends and carers of our patients we extend the same loving support, help and counselling, as such illnesses affect whole families.

The Hospice operates as a 12 bedded adult in-patient unit as well as a day hospice. The Hospice helps its patients enjoy a better quality of life, often enabling them to do things which they thought had gone forever. It is a special place which is full of life, not just a place where people go to die: many benefit from day hospice care and others return home following a period as an in-patient or attend our out-patients clinics.

Adult in-patient services are available to individuals with complex problems associated with a life limiting illness. Our specialist services are delivered by a multi professional team including doctors, nurses, counsellors, social workers, chaplains and therapists. Planned admissions include short term relief for carers and end of life care is supportive and sensitive to the needs of the patient and their loved ones.

The Day Hospice offers supportive care to people with living with a life threatening or life limiting illness. The surroundings are very relaxed and comfortable offering a choice of activities that are centered on wellbeing, companionship and support.

We provide an Outpatient Clinic which runs three times a week. This is an introduction to the palliative care service, symptom control, an alternative to admission, psychological support and a link with the Oncology service.

The Family Support Team is here to help and support our patients, their families and their carers. They can help manage the future challenges and help people feel more resilient and able to face the future with courage. We also offer help with a range of activities, including memory boxes, boxes of hugs and kisses and writing about the future.

Spiritual Care is provided to give compassionate companionship to patients and families and to be a support in whatever way they may be asked.

Reiki Therapy is available to all Patients and Carers as a gentle therapy to aid relaxation, makes you feel at peace, reduce anxiety, relive stress and help boost the immune system. You start moving toward your unique physical, mental, and spiritual balance, and your body's own healing mechanisms begin to function more effectively.

By its very nature the care and support the Hospice provides is expensive. Raising the ongoing funds to sustain the service is a huge challenge given the geographic/catchment area of the Hospice and population from whom we have to draw funds.

The Hospice employs either full or part time around 120 staff. In addition to this the Hospice benefits from the help of around 440 active volunteers who are involved in every aspect of the hospices operation. We estimate that we save approximately £400,000 yearly by having volunteers supporting our staff based on full time equivalent roles, but this figure can’t represent the level of commitment, empathy and dedication that we are gifted by each volunteer for the thousands of hours that they offer us year on year.

Suicide is the biggest killer of young people – male and female – under 35 in the UK. In 2016, 1,666 young people took their own lives. That equates to over four per day. Every year many thousands more attempt or contemplate suicide, harm themselves or suffer alone, afraid to speak openly about how they are feeling.
PAPYRUS is the national charity for the prevention of young suicide.
We draw from the experience of many who have been touched personally by young suicide across the UK and speak on their behalf in our campaigns and in our endeavours to save young lives. Together we believe that with appropriate support and education, many young suicides can be prevented.
We deliver awareness and prevention training, provide confidential support and suicide intervention through HOPELineUK, campaign and influence national policy, and empower young people to lead suicide prevention activities in their own communities.
Here are some of our core beliefs:
PAPYRUS believes that many young suicides are preventable
PAPYRUS believes that no young person should suffer alone with thoughts or feelings of hopelessness
PAPYRUS believes that no one should have to go through the heartbreak of losing a loved one to suicide
PAPYRUS believes that everyone can play a role in preventing young suicide

North West Air Ambulance Charity

1075641

A huge thank you for choosing to raise money for your North West Air Ambulance Charity.

In a split second unexpected things can happen that will change your life forever. It is in these moments that our crew of pilots and HEMS paramedics and doctors will be at the right place at the right time delivering vital pre-hospital care to the patient, reducing the risk of long term injury and saving lives.

Just as many critically injured patients would not survive without the service, your North West Air Ambulance Charity would not be here without you.

Our lifesaving service is funded by the generosity of people like you through donations, fundraising activity, lottery membership and through our network of retail outlets.

As a charity we need to raise more than £8 million each year to stay operational.
• £9 could fund one minute of a North West Air Ambulance mission.
• £250 could supply a primary response bag that carries the drugs and medical equipment our medical team needs to treat patients in major trauma incidents.
• £2000 could fund a year's supply of foil medical blankets, designed to retain body heat for patients in shock.
• £13,500 could fuel one of our aircraft for a month.

Welcome to Team NWAA, together we can make a lifesaving difference to people across the North West.

Over the last forty years survival rates have doubled, which means two in four people are living for 10 years or more after being diagnosed. We hope to accelerate progress and see three quarters of patients surviving 10 years or more in the next 20 years.
We take our learning’s from the lab right to the patient’s bedside and work to diagnose, treat and prevent cancer – so at Cancer Research UK we really are tackling cancer on every front. What’s more, we are the only charity with the knowledge and expertise to tackle all 200 types of cancer.

With our ability to fly approximately four times faster than a land ambulance, we can minimise travel times and the risk for little patients. Our dedicated service helps desperately sick babies and children get the care they need, where they need it, quickly. Helping babies to grow into children and children into adults and creating memories for families that they may never have had. Together let’s keep hope alive for the little lives we fly.

This includes pre-trial therapy for those individuals going through a criminal justice process. Support and information are also provided to partners and other family members to enable them to help their loved one on their journey of recovery.

A variety of training opportunities are provided in the local community which focus on raising awareness and prevention. Working in partnership with a range of organisations, training is provided to vulnerable young people as well as to professionals.

The Birchall Trust has been working in the local community for the last 28 years and has established an excellent reputation for its specialist knowledge and expertise. It operates from a set of shared values that ensure service users are treated with respect, understanding and compassion.

The charity was founded by Christine Birchall in 1991 and was initially called the South Cumbria Rape and Abuse Service. Christine was inspired to set up the service after she watched a BBC documentary highlighting the lack of support for victims of rape and sexual abuse. Christine set about gaining qualifications in counselling and set up a local support service, running from an attic room in Kendal with £300 and a telephone contributed by British Telecom. The service was initially run by Christine supported by two volunteers.

From these humble beginnings the charity has developed significantly over the years. After initially having its main base in Kendal, the charity moved to 60, Hartington Street in Barrow in 2000 where it has had its main offices and counselling rooms for the last 19 years. Following Christine’s death in 2006, the organisation decided to change its name to the Birchall Trust. This was not only to recognise Christine’s work but also to give the charity a more palatable and dignified name which was well received.

In 2010 the charity expanded into North Lancashire and now has 5 counselling/therapy rooms in Barrow, 2 counselling/therapy rooms in Kendal, 1 counselling room in Lancaster and 7 counselling/therapy rooms and an office space at a Community Hub in Morecambe.

1146011

Alice's Escapes offers holidays in the South Lakes for families with terminally and seriously-ill children, as well as bereavement breaks for those who have suffered the tragic loss of a child.
Given a terminal prognosis at just fourteen-years-old, Alice's dream was to provide a break from hospital - an escape where families could simply enjoy being together.
Alice selflessly chose to dedicate her remaining time to good causes and her drive and determination was rewarded in April 2012, when Alice's Escapes became a reality. With three holiday lodges, one fully-adapted for disabled guests, our breaks are provided free-of-charge and include attractions and a comprehensive grocery pack.
Sadly, Alice lost her courageous battle in 2013, but her family and friends remain committed to continuing her incredible legacy.
We now also offer bereavement breaks for those who have sadly lost a child.

Many of our young users face emotional challenges such as anxiety, stress, and anger, caused by the environmental pressures of living in poverty. We therefore orientate our extra-curricular activities to offer therapeutic skill-based outlets and have a variety of exciting programs planned. Activities include weekends away, offsite trips, a public showcase and therapy and mentoring sessions. Through this, we aim to empower the disadvantaged young people with vital life skills and inject them with a sense of pride and accomplishment to help them to believe that they have a bright future ahead of them, despite their current high levels of deprivation, lack of skills and social isolation.
