OVER A QUARTER OF THE 13.3 MILLION DISABLED PEOPLE LIVING IN THE UK SAY THAT THEY DO NOT FREQUENTLY HAVE CHOICE AND CONTROL OVER THEIR DAILY LIVES. Bendrigg Trust, a Kendal based outdoor centre and charity have a mission to tackle this injustice. Through the provision of adventure activities such as Caving, Climbing & Canoeing, they promote inclusion, encourage independence and build the self-confidence of disabled and disadvantaged people.
My brother has a condition called Friedreich's ataxia which is an autosomal recessive genetic disease that causes difficulty walking, a loss of sensation in the arms and legs and impaired speech that worsens over time. He was diagnosed at 13 years old and now 28 he is a full time wheelchair user, is slowly losing his hearing and speech. He came to Bendrigg on the Adult Open course last year and had such a phenomenal time! The memories we made that week together will last a lifetime.
We were fortunate enough to be able to afford a trip to Bendrigg, but others are not so lucky and for those people Bendrigg raises funds to help. I want to raise as much as possible for this incredible cause to help enable those less fortunate than us to have an amazing adventure of their own. Please donate what you can to this fantastic cause.
